Locally our congregation provides active support to the
Community Ministry of Montgomery
County (CMMC), an interfaith organization of 125 congregations which provides
clothing, food, shelter, mentoring, and support of more than 30,000 men,
women and children here in Montgomery County. Some of the CMMC services
include:

Community emergency support

Clothing centers
-
Homeless shelters
-
Support for low-income entrepreneurs
-
Education and advocacy for foster
care children and low-income families to develop
self-reliance and independence
We keep ourselves aware and informed about needs in our community and our world,
and seek new opportunities in mission by having special events and occasional
seminars. Some examples:

In November 2001, BUMC held an advocacy Forum on "Poverty in Montgomery
County". Local politicians, service providers and church members
came together to discuss the causes of poverty in our area and how the church can more effectively work to
address them

In September 2002 we offered a four week Sunday School class called "Understanding Homelessness and
Mental Health in Montgomery County" and invited local experts to come and speak.

Our Alternative Gifts for Christmas project provides an alternative
method for people to send Christmas cards to friends and relatives and give financial gifts to
organizations that serve people in need.

Table - Every 1st Sunday is "Sandwich Sunday" and we send
hundreds of sandwiches made by members of our congregation to this
on-the-street hunger relief program in D.C.
So Others Might Eat (SOME)
Every 5th Monday we send a team of volunteers to prepare and serve a
noon time meal.
